Encourage Family Storytelling
Family storytelling is fun. It's an activity that all ages can participate in, learn from and enjoy. Sharing family stories can bring generations together with storytelling and listening. The young ones love to hear about funny things their parents did and how they got in and out of trouble. Grandparents and parents can tell how things were when they were young.
The young ones are fascinated and the older ones enjoy reliving their past memories. There is joy in telling and listening.
You might record the family storytelling with videotape or audio tape the stories. It is always entertaining when you play the stories back. Someone in the family might like to document some of the stories for a family scrapbook and even include pictures, if possible.
How to Encourage Reminiscing
When family or friends are gathered together, make a game out of sharing stories. Enjoy hearing the voices and the spoken words.
Have a group leader start the activity and choose someone to go first.
Ask specific questions. Instead of “Tell me something interesting about your life.” For example you might ask, “What was it like on your first day of school? Old photographs are great conversation starters.
To encourage personal reminiscences, ask each person to tell a short story about a specific topic such as: A favorite pet, babies, cars, dolls, pranks, romances, school, sports, toys, travel and many more. Each story told may give an idea to the next teller.
Listen actively. Concentrate on the storyteller, maintain eye contact and respond with interest. Don't interrupt until the story is finished. Show appreciation for each story and have fun with it.
Sharing Family and Friends Stories is a Gift of Heritage
A SHORT STORY
Note from Jo: In my search for personal stories from friends, I discovered this lovely note from a dear friend who moved to Colorado. It has a wonderful message for those of us who are young at heart and enjoying all that life still has to offer.
"You are in my thoughts as I gaze at the snow covered ground and trees, blue, blue sky with the bright sun giving a seasonal sparkle to all. I look forward to news of you. All is well here - for four years I've been treasuring these mountain surroundings - elk, deer, numerous variety of birds and time spent with my young families. This 2000 year has me upgraded into that ubiquitous computer world. What a treat!
Another plus this year…after having read Roger Rosenblatt's book, "Rules for Aging", I discovered Rule #1, "It Doesn't Matter", to be quite helpful."
Signed, Your Friend…………………..
